Sex T-Rex is a Featured Act at the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival, and if you’ve ever seen their work, you know this is not a casual distinction. Since forming in Toronto in 2008, Sex T-Rex has built a reputation as one of Canada’s most accomplished and consistently exciting sketch comedy companies. Their shows combine cinematic storytelling, precise physical comedy, and meticulously choreographed chaos, earning them major accolades like the 2024 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Ensemble, multiple Best of Fest honours, and critical praise from the Toronto Star, Broadway World, and beyond.
They return to TOsketchfest with Crime After Crime (After Crime), a multi-award-winning hit that spans three eras of crime cinema, from film noir to buddy cops, all filtered through Sex T-Rex’s signature blend of high-stakes storytelling and deeply silly goofs. Expect fast pacing, bold physicality, and a show that rewards close attention while never taking itself too seriously. This is big, ambitious sketch comedy, executed by a troupe operating at the top of their game.
“Our comedy is very silly, but you’re also going to get a full-on story.” – Seann Murray, Sex T-Rex
We asked Sex T-Rex about their comedy, their process, and what audiences can expect from this show. Here’s what they had to say.
For readers meeting you for the first time: who are you, and how would you describe your comedy?
Oh hi, we’re Sex T-Rex! We do very genre-based physical comedy – the idea is to translate big, cinematic tropes to the stage, mostly using your imagination. Our comedy is very silly, but you’re also going to get a full-on story.
Tell us about the show you’re bringing to TOsketchfest. How did it come together?
Our show Crime After Crime (After Crime) follows a single family through three different “crime periods,” with a Film Noir set in the ’50s, a Heist film set in the ’70s, and a Buddy Cop movie set in the ’90s. Crime came together with the idea of exploring multiple genres in a single show, and having the individual pieces be able to be performed independently. We got too caught up in the plot for that last part, and now it’s a total package!
What can audiences expect when they come to see this show?
Loving sendups of these classic genres, lots of high-octane action (fight scenes, car chases, dance montages), and a surprising amount of heart for a goofy comedy show.
What makes this show different from your past work, or from other sketch shows audiences might have seen?
Crime After Crime is a very ambitious show; we cover a lot of ground in an hour and you’ll get a continuous story, which is different from most sketch, while also getting a constant stream of jokes.
Why is TOsketchfest a great fit for this show?
We actually performed “A Noir in Beige,” the first part of the Crime After Crime triptych, at TOsketchfest in 2019 – and it earned us the coveted Best of TOsketchfest Award! Now that Crime is in its complete form, we are so excited to bring it back to one of our very favourite festivals.
Who do you think will especially love this show?
Anyone who loves to laugh. Comedy artists who are into theatre. Theatre people who are into comedy. Mouth-noise enthusiasts.
What excites you most about being a Featured Act at TOsketchfest this year?
TOsketchfest celebrates the Toronto comedy community like no other festival. It’s a real honour to be back as a Featured Act. We’re looking forward to seeing lots of shows by incredibly talented acts!
If someone is on the fence, what would you say to convince them to buy a ticket?
You’ll get to watch four grown adults reenact a car chase through swing dance. Also they sell beer there.
Why This Is a Featured Show
Sex T-Rex was selected as a Featured Act because their work represents the very best of what sketch comedy can be right now. Crime After Crime (After Crime) is a fully realized theatrical experience that blends genre parody, physical storytelling, and ensemble precision into a cohesive, confident show. The programming committee was drawn to the ambition of the show, its technical execution, and the way it balances scale with clarity. Every movement, transition, and beat is intentional, without ever losing the joy or surprise of live comedy.
This show also reflects the evolution of a veteran ensemble still pushing themselves creatively. With over a decade of acclaimed productions behind them, Sex T-Rex continues to raise the bar for long-form sketch, proving that the form can be cinematic, emotionally grounded, and wildly entertaining all at once. Featuring Crime After Crime (After Crime) at TOsketchfest is both a celebration of their legacy and a spotlight on a show that exemplifies excellence, craft, and ambition in contemporary sketch comedy.
Don’t miss your chance to see one of TOsketchfest’s standout acts.
This featured show has limited seating and is expected to sell quickly.
