Comedy Road Trip is a virtual meet-up with comedians and festival producers from across North America discussing the current landscape of sketch comedy, with a glimpse into their local scenes. Attendees will get a sense of what is going on in various comedy communities across North America, as we all consider traveling for performance opportunities again.

Host: Alia Rasul – Toronto

Alia Ceniza Rasul is an award-winning artist based in Toronto, Canada. On her mother’s side of the family she is Bisaya, from Dumaguete. On her father’s side she is Tausug, from Jolo, Sulu. She identifies as a Filipina muslim. She was born in the Philippines but grew up in the Middle East, spending most of her childhood in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Dubai, United Arab Emirates. She officially became a Canadian immigrant after completing her Economics and Psychology degree at McGill University in Montreal.

With a passion for telling stories about the Filipin* diaspora, Alia has created, produced and starred in multiple award winning projects including Tawa and Island Womxn Rise, annual, sold-out Filipin* comedy festivals, Kwento, a performance of improvised Filipin* folktale, the sketch comedy revue Tita Jokes, and her play, Tang Ina. Alia is a member of the Tita Collective, an internationally renowned sisterhood of Filipina theatre artists. Additionally, she works with Bespoke Collective, a creative consultancy at the intersection of culture, public good and the future. She is a big fan of disabled artist Ophira Calof’s work. Veronica Dang – New York

Veronica Dang is an award-winning director/actor/writer and comedian. You may have seen her find a dead body on Law & Order:SVU or teaching people about Yellow Fever at comedy clubs. She founded NYC’s premier Asian American sketch comedy team Model Majority which has been featured in The New York Times and more. Ronald Dario – Vancouver

Ronald Dario is a writer, actor, improviser and sketch comedian who has appeared in Amazon Prime’s Upload, CBC Gem’s The Slowest Show and voices multiple characters in an upcoming Adult Swim cartoon. Ronald performs improv weekly with his groups Treat Show and Little Mountain Improv. He teaches improv and sketch at Blind Tiger Comedy and is a Program Coordinator for its Diversity Program. Ronald has written, directed and acted in comedy videos for CBC and for groups like Brunch Comedy. His work has been screened at places like JFL Northwest and Philly Sketchfest. His videos have been nominated at the Vancouver Comedy Awards and showcased at the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival. Ronald has written and performed material for Kelly&Kelly’s sketch comedy podcast for kids, The Plop. He has also performed at comedy at JFL NorthWest Festival, UCB Theatre’s Del Close Marathon, Rapid Fire Theatre’s Improvaganza, Toronto’s Bad Dog Theatre, the Vancouver Improv Festival, and the Vancouver Sketch Comedy Festival.

Curt Riedy – Philadelphia

Curt is a filmmaker, comedy writer and performer in the Philadelphia area. A long-standing member of the sketch-comedy troupe High Dramma, Curt has performed in comedy festivals across Boston, Baltimore, Montreal and New York City. He’s also one of the producers of Philly Sketchfest (the city’s long-running sketch comedy festival) and is currently the Sketch 101 instructor at Helium Comedy Club. He mentored two comedy teams for the Philly Improv Theater’s Iron Sketch Competition and has produced, directed and edited videos for several local sketch troupes (including The Incredible Shrinking Matt & Jacquie, Mean Wendy Band and Patric Writes Sketches). Recently, he’s produced and edited a variety of comedic online spots for brands such as Land O’Lakes, V8, Campbell’s and the NFL. As an actor/comedian, he’s appeared on television shows such as “The Rotten Tomatoes Show”, “Servant”, “Flight of the Conchords”, and “Conan”.

Kyle Romero – Austin

Kyle Romero is an actor and writer based out of Austin, TX. Kyle is a member of the sketch comedy collective Pendulum and is the Festival Co-Director for Austin Sketch Fest. He is a graduate of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in Los Angeles and an improv and sketch faculty member at ColdTowne Theater and Fallout Theater. In Austin, he has appeared in the B. Iden Payne Award winning One Hour Til Air and the regional premiere of Bigfoot: The Musical, as well as directed the play Sex a.k.a. Wieners and Boobs.

Deirdre Trudeau – Montreal

Deirdre Trudeau is the Festival Director at Montreal Sketchfest, one fifth of the sketch troupe HOT RAW FIRE, and one entire human being on her own. In addition she has been steadily involved in the Montreal comedy community for a bunch of years both on and off stage with Ladyfest, Brunch Club, Le Nouveau International, and Theatre Ste-Catherine. Her BFA in Art History has yet to prove useful.

Lauren Vernea – Los Angeles

Lauren Vernea is a comedy writer and stand-up comedian. She is a staff writer for the largest sketch comedy channel on Youtube, Smosh (25 million subscribers)She was a finalist for the Disney Animation Writer’s Program. Her musical feature script “The Voices of Lightning” and sci-fi pilot “Queens of the Earth” recently made the Top 10 of the Coverfly “Red List.” She is the founder, head writer, a performer, and director in the all Black female sketch group, “The Black Pantherettes” (UCB, The Second City, NY Sketchfest, The People’s Improv Theater, The LA Diversity in Comedy Festival). Lauren was recently contracted by The Second City to perform, write, and produce a new comedy show for “The Black Pantherettes” on The Second City’s streaming channel premiering in 2022. She’s a graduate of the Conservatory Program at The Second City and has an MS in Communications from Northwestern University.
