2021 Sketch Comedy Project Fund

Posted on: February 1st, 2021 by TOsketchfest Staff
Pat & Tony Adams Freedom Fund for the Arts

TOsketchfest is once again proud to partner with The Pat & Tony Adams Freedom Fund for the Arts to announce the 7th Annual Sketch Comedy Project Fund – Applications are now open!

The Sketch Comedy Project Fund is Canada’s only comedy grant cultivating the development of Canadian comedic voices. It’s a comedy grant… on its own terms. Since 2015 The Sketch Comedy Project Fund has provided funding to 19 sketch comedy projects in Toronto.

The Fund will invest in ensemble-based scripted projects by Canadian comedians working primarily in Toronto.

What does the fund support? Anything really – just make a case for how your project represents the next step in the comedy careers of your ensemble! In the past The Fund has supported: touring opportunities, development of live shows, recording comedy albums, working with directors, developing pitch packages… just make the case it’s your next big step!

TOsketchfest21 – Same Festival, Different Look

Posted on: December 9th, 2020 by TOsketchfest Staff

The 15th Annual TOsketchfest in March 2020 was cut short due to this new thing called COVID-19. Since then a LOT has changed in the comedy scene (and the whole world) as we know it. Therefore TOsketchfest will not be able to hold the Festival as per usual in 2021.

So now what?! It’s 2020 – we’re throwing out the playbook and bringing you the best sketch comedy next March in our own new way.

In March 2021 get ready for TOsketchfest21 – Screen Time Edition.

We’re gearing up for an online Festival mashing up all your favourite TOsketchfest ingredients: the TOsketchfest Film Fest, Learning & Fun Professional Development series, and numerous sketch comedy performance screenings by a phenomenal lineup of acts from across North America… and beyond!

PLUS we’re adding to the recipe with a dynamic roster of “shot live” stage productions, shot-from-home sketches, shows from satellite stage parnters, short comedy films, all kinds of post-show hangs and goofy fun ways to get your TOsketchfest on.

Streaming Revenue to Artists

And here’s the best part – in this most challenging time, streaming revenue will go to comedy creators!

Submissions are CLOSED!

TOsketchfest21 was accepting submissions via FilmFreeway!

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for the funniest, bestest, awesomerest short-form comedy… under 10mins:

  • Comedy Shorts
  • Animation
  • Micro-Comedy
  • Solo Sketch
  • “Shot Live” Performance
  • Web Series Episodes

Since we’ll be hangin’ on screens anyway… we’re also looking for:

  • Short Comedy Films (up to 20mins)

Submissions Closed February 1, 2021.

IBPOC COMEDY WRITING WORKSHOP WITH BRANDON HACKETT

Posted on: July 28th, 2020 by TOsketchfest Staff No Comments

UPDATE: This workshop is currently full!

We are happy to announce a new IBPOC Comedy Writing workshop as part of the ongoing Professional Development program for the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival.

IBPOC COMEDY WRITING WORKSHOP with Brandon Hackett
SATURDAY, AUGUST 8
1-3pm EST via Zoom
Workshop is currently full. We plan to run this workshop again in the future.

This is a FREE workshop for IBPOC comedians who wish to sharpen their comedy writing skills for stage or screen. Learn how to collaborate with others in a writers’ room or group setting, and find the humour in your real life stories. The only prerequisite is an interest in exploring your comedic voice.

The August 8 workshop will be taught by TOsketchfest alumni and Untitled Black Sketch Project member Brandon Hackett. Previous instructors for the IBPOC Comedy Writing workshop have included Nelu Handa and Nour Hadidi.

Brandon Hackett is a Toronto-based television writer and performer.  He’s written for the comedy series This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Gary and his Demons, Tall Boys and The Beaverton, the latter garnering a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Writing in Variety or Sketch Comedy.  He is an alumnus of the Second City mainstage, where he wrote and performed four revues, including Come What Mayhem and The Best is Yet to Come Undone.  He also co-wrote and stars in This Art Works!, a CBC web miniseries co-produced by Madeleine Co. and OCAD University. Most recently, Brandon saw a project through several stages of development, including bible development, story arc, and scripting, at CBC with Don Ferguson Productions.

A Note from The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival

Posted on: June 19th, 2020 by TOsketchfest Staff

We saw the protests in the United States in response to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and too many who came before. We saw the protests across Canada in response to the deaths of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, Chantel Moore, and too many who came before.

Then the comedy community, specifically IBPOC comedians, began to publicly share their painful experiences with comedy institutions across North America. We heard the stories of racism, tokenism, gaslighting, box checking, and discrimination.

While the intent of TOsketchfest has always been to elevate, celebrate and support all sketch comedians, a sober and critical look at our own history tells us that our intent has not always matched outcomes. We have fallen short.

To our artists, staff, volunteers and audiences we apologize for failing to create an inclusive, safe, and accessible space at TOsketchfest.

Specifically, we apologize for the times we did not quickly and decisively shut down racism on our stages; for the fact that IBPOC and other marginalized voices have been almost entirely excluded from strategy, mandate and artistic direction decisions for 15 years; for the subtle and overt ways we have centred white artists and white comedy in our programming, marketing and sketch community culture; and for believing that the progress we’d made in creating space and opportunity for underrepresented identities was good enough. We’d like to thank the people who have brought these and other issues to our attention, and acknowledge that there is still much to learn.

We deeply regret and apologize for not doing better, sooner. This will change. Here’s how.

In the coming weeks and months, TOsketchfest will do the following:

  1. We will hire a consultant to conduct a diversity audit of our organization to uncover weaknesses and to identify areas for improvement.
  2. We will consult with IBPOC members of our community for an unbiased assessment of our activities, mandate, and role in the artistic community, and pay them for their time and expertise.
  3. We will change the composition of our Board, staff and committees to give more voice and decision making power to IBPOC community members.
  4. At the end of our analysis, we will report all findings and the actions we will take to improve.

These are the first steps. There will be more. We commit to ongoing learning, listening, and growth to make The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival an actively anti-racist space where IBPOC are at home, celebrated, and empowered on and off stage.

Comedy isn’t just a laugh. At its best, comedy is an art form that can identify and articulate social injustice. Comedy can initiate the uncomfortable conversations required for social change. Comedy needs diverse voices.

Black Lives Matter. Black Comedy Matters.

We have work to do. It’s time to get started.

Signed,
Paul Snepsts, Julianne Snepsts, Damien Nelson and Megan MacKeigan

Performances Continue at TOsketchfest

Posted on: March 13th, 2020 by TOsketchfest Staff No Comments

The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival is closely monitoring the recent outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) and are following the guidelines provided by public health authorities.

The events for Saturday, March 14 will continue as planned, with the guidelines provided by public health strictly in place. We have postponed the Best of the Fest Award Show and the IBPOC Comedy Writers workshop previously scheduled for Sunday, March 15 until a later date. TOsketchfest will properly honour the award winners and rescheduled workshops later this year.

In reaction to these unprecedented circumstances, we have reduced venues capacities in all venues by 50%, and spaced seating to allow for “social distancing.” We are working closely with our venue partners to ensure our spaces are clean. We are providing the tools for good hygiene and encouraging best practices from our audiences, performers, and staff. We are asking all participants to stay home if you are sick or have been in contact with someone who is sick.

TOsketchfest is a small charity, and one of Canada’s only charities dedicated to supporting comedic voices. In keeping with our core values, we have honoured our commitment to pay our artists, staff, and venues. Ticket sales for our final festival weekend are a huge part of our annual revenue and we ask ticket holders for their partnership in helping us continue to support comedians in these exceptional circumstances.

Should a ticket buyer choose to no longer attend, we ask you to please consider converting your unused tickets into an equivalent charitable donation to the festival – which gives you a charitable receipt – or we will credit the value of your ticket purchase to your account to be used for any future TOsketchfest event. Any questions about unused tickets can be directed to boxoffice@torontosketchfest.com.

We acknowledge this situation affects the arts community as a whole, and we stand committed to supporting the career development of Canadian comedic writer performers.

Currently all TOsketchfest shows and events to March 14 are moving ahead as planned, and we will continue close contact with authorities in the coming days. We are committed to making the final day of the Festival fun, comfortable, and safe! We thank you for cooperation.

Socially distancing?

We’ve got you covered. We have reduced venues capacities in all venues – plus we’re offering a FREE Facebook Live stream for select performances! Get over to the TOsketchfest Facebook Page and sit in on the fun!

2020 Learning and Fun Workshops

So, Your Show Got Cancelled: Workshop
Saturday March 7 at 2pm
Theatre Centre (1115 Queen Street West)

Learn the steps about how to get a pitch meeting (or another pitch meeting), what to expect when you walk in the room of executives, and how to accept and apply constructive criticism. Learn what needs to be included in your package, and how to do those micro and macro edits to your script that might make all of the difference! Walk away feeling inspired to get YOUR pitch package together! This workshop ‘Pitching for TV’ sold out last year!
