5 Sketch Comedy Shows to See in August

Posted on: August 2nd, 2022 by TOsketchfest Staff

Remember when you were a kid and summer seemed to stretch on and on into a beautiful, sticky, and endless oblivion? But now as an adult you are just trying to jam as many beach days, hasty vacations and patio hangs as you can into the few short weeks that are rapidly passing by? Well, let us help you plan this last full month of summer with a sweet list of sketch comedy happening in Toronto.

Gender? I Hardly Know Them: August 9-10

Gender? I Hardly Know Them returns to Toronto with a fast-paced, joyfully provocative queer sketch show straight from the heart of the God-fearing, gun-toting, beef-loving Alberta prairies. Created and performed by gay, short, and hot non-binary comedians Elena (or Eli) Belyea (they/she) and Syd Campbell (they/them), Gender? I Hardly Know Them is out to queer the world, one denim punchline at a time.

7:30pm nightly at Buddies In Bad Times Theatre, 12 Alexander Street. Get your tickets at: https://tickets.buddiesinbadtimes.com/TheatreManager/1/login?event=0

Frances by Laura Ramoso: August 11-13

2020 Best of the Fest Award winner Laura Ramoso will debut her second sketch special, Frances, in the city that started it all. Directed by Alastair Forbes, Laura Ramoso is taking physical comedy, satire, mime, and critically-acclaimed writing to the nth degree. Bigger, bolder, and riskier, Frances pushes the boundaries of the form to create sketch comedy magic.

8pm nightly (plus 10pm on Aug 12) at Alumnae Theatre Company, 70 Berkeley Street.

Chow, Joey Crewe, Madison Mayhew and Taryn Parrish.

Sketch Comedy at Toronto Fringe 2022

Posted on: July 4th, 2022 by TOsketchfest Staff

This year the Toronto Fringe is back in person presenting 100 shows at 11 venues across the city July 6-17, 2022. Toronto Fringe has a massive comedy contingent this year with over 50 comedy shows with musicals, improv, solo shows and, of course, sketch. Here are the sketch comedy shows to check out this year, plus exciting shows by TOSketchFest alum!

ALIA CENIZA RASUL: MORO GIRL

Alia grew up identifying as a “Moro”, a Filipina Muslim, all the while attending Sunday School. Now in her mid-thirties, grappling with her seemingly conflicting identities, she is looking to finally figure out who the heck she is, and why she likes charcuterie so darn much (her bank account also wants to know). Self-reflection isn’t enough (sorry Deepak Chopra) so she goes searching for answers through her family’s stories and history. Will she find what she’s looking for?

AN EVENING WITH DEVON & JACKIE

A dynamite evening of sketch comedy with a couple of swell broads! Modern world got you down? Devon Henderson (The Second City, Bad Dog Theatre) and Jackie Twomey (NOW Magazine Breakthrough Artist, Dead Parents Society) deliver a soirée of silliness with a touch of neuroses, “An Evening with Devon & Jackie” is a love letter to live comedy.

CLIP SHOW

Oh no! TOsketchfest21 Best of the Fest Award Winner Jon Blair got locked in the pantry on the day of his Fringe show, in a basement where the elevator is stuck! And the building got snowed in! Also, the security guard went home! And it’s Christmas still! Jon might not know how he’s going to get out, but he does know one thing: He’s sure had a lot of crazy memories over the years… years… years…

DON VALLEY GIRLS: A SKETCH COMEDY REVUE

The cast of Don Valley Girls has aged out of being the Main Character, and it kinda really sucks. So they wrote a sketch show about it because why cry when you can cry while you laugh! … on stage, in front of everyone. Come for the snarky blurb, stay for the weird (sometimes heartfelt) sketches, songs, and occasional video interlude. This is NOT your auntie’s sketch show. (Or maybe it is.)

#NOTALLFEDORAS

From Star Wars to the Snyder Cut, this sketch comedy show dismantles some of the more harmful aspects of fan culture. What if Grant Was One of Us? – An Intro to Grant Writing for Comedians

Tom HillTom Hill

Instructor: Tom Hill

In recent decades, while the comedy community has generally flourished in Canada, comedians have rarely been the recipients of significant government funding. Comedians were left to wonder–to misquote Joan Osborne–what if grants was one of us?

Thankfully, the landscape is beginning to change, in part thanks to advocacy from organizations like CANCOM, CASC, and TOSketchFest. Some grants allow comedy-forward projects to apply, and some comedians have even received funding to create new work. It remains an uphill battle, but it is time for the comedy community to level up its grant literacy now that these career-altering doors are cracking open.

Tom Hill is one half of Hip.Bang! and Artistic Director of Blind Tiger Comedy, two groups that have managed to receive funding for comedy-first projects. In this workshop, you will learn about the fundamentals of the grant opportunities in Canada, and some of the approaches and skills Tom uses in planning and writing grants. This workshop is suitable for comedians brand new to grant writing or mid-way through an application. The workshop will start with a presentation by Tom and then follow with a Q&A section for participants.

Bit Playas, Tallboyz, etc.) to create a series of digital shorts using our shiny new TOsketchfest Shoot-At-Home Production Kit, which is a camera/lighting/sound essentials set that we created with the intention of loaning out to you, the Toronto comedy community, to make your own digital films!

This workshop will begin with a screening of one of the digital shorts Darrell made with the Shoot-At-Home Production Kit. He’ll then walk you through his process, in detail, from-concept-to-production-to-post and provide a useful take-away document for when it’s your turn to make your own content. You will leave the workshop with a solid understanding of the tools and resources available to you, with a real-life case study of how they were used!

TOsketchfest aims to keep our Professional Development Program inclusive. As such, a limited number of scholarships are available. If the registration cost is a barrier to participation in a panel or workshop, please fill out this form.

Kick-start the Comedy Comeback

Posted on: November 29th, 2021 by TOsketchfest Staff

Giving Tuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back, and we hope you will consider supporting TOsketchfest to help Kick-start the Comedy Comeback.

It has been a difficult two years for comedians. And throughout, TOsketchfest has been an important ally for Canadian comedians: a patron to support new comedic voices; a champion to showcase and celebrate this work; an onramp to careers in comedy and entertainment; a place to make connections; and an opportunity to earn income by making us laugh.

As we look ahead to a return to stages and theatres in March, TOsketchfest continues to need your help.

Our goal is to raise $30,000 by March of 2020 to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Double Festival artist payments – help us pay out $30,000 in guaranteed artist payments at TOsketchfest22 (more than double payouts from 2021). With limited capacity at shows, we can only do this through your donations.
  • Make investments in Accessibility features – invest $7,000 in adopting and expanding services like Captioning, ASL and Described Video to make Canadian live comedy more accessible to Deaf and disabled communities.
  • Focus on health & safety – contribute to offsetting $5,000 in incremental costs associated with the live production in the time of COVID.
  • Skill-up in the digital space – create more opportunities for comedians by investing  $15,000 to develop skills needed to create quality broadcast and streaming productions – both in our staff and the comedy community

Help us continue to be the ally comedians need. Help Kick-start the Comedy Comeback!

This Giving Tuesday, make a gift to TOsketchfest, Canada’s comedy incubator.

THE SKETCH COMEDY PROJECT FUND – 2021 RECIPIENTS

Posted on: October 1st, 2021 by TOsketchfest Staff

The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival is proud to announce the 2021 recipients of The Sketch Comedy Project Fund. This year four projects were awarded funding, each representing an important “next step” in the careers of their participants. The Sketch Comedy Project Fund is made possible through the generous support of The Pat and Tony Adams Freedom Fund for the Arts.

2021 SCPF RECIPIENT PROJECTS:

Life Mosh by High Heel Bikini

Life Mosh is a sketch web series about Amaan Abdul, an eighteen-year-old kid living with his single mother in Scarborough. In Urdu, the name Amaan means peace and the name Abdul means servant, so in essence this show is about a peaceful “servant” (of the $14.50 an hour variety) trying to figure out why he should keep on keeping on.

“Life Mosh is a comedy about the experience of being up in the air with nowhere to land in the rapidly changing Toronto and Canada. It is a refrain met with a pat on the back and maybe if you are lucky the offer of a joint. You have to pay your rent and phone bill on the same day and you have a date this week? LIFE MOSH!”

French Anglais: Escape Deux Sudbury

French Anglais: Escape Deux Sudbury is an ambitious quasi-sequel to the popular short film from last year, French Anglais: Birthday. In French Anglais: Escape Deux Sudbury two rag-tag teams on separate sides of the French-Canadian revolution race to Sudbury to steal a secret, magical helmet that harnesses the power of knowing every language in the world. Filled with car chases, bar fights, exploding head practical effects and talking raccoons, the film is as much a parody of the action genre, as it is a straight action film.

“God is real and he told us to make a sequel to our short film, French Anglais (2020). French Anglais: Escape Deux Sudbury is an action-comedy-thriller short film from Joel Edmiston, Conrad Osei, Ben Stager & Sam Burns.”

Manor House by Cookie Biscuits

Cookie Biscuits is in development for an exciting new digital series: Manor House. A spoof on reality television, the show begins with a group of ten strangers moving into the same house to compete in challenges, vote each other out, and eventually face off for the show’s grand prize. Each character is based in a certain reality-show archetype, which allows for countless opportunities to flip those types on their heads.

“We are flabberghasted and delighted to have been chosen for the Sketch Comedy Project Fund! We’re working on our biggest project yet, and this funding will be a huge help in making it a reality. We’ve been having a great time writing silly jokes in our meetings and can’t wait to share them with the world. (We’re quite excited to waste your money on fake moustaches and cold pizza. JK. Kinda.)”

Tommi Lupone’s 11 O’Clock Numbers! by Tom Hearn

Tommi Lupone’s 11 O’clock Numbers! is a musical theatre comedy album / retrospective. Tommi Lupone is a Broadway legend much like his namesake Patti (no relation). After a career spanning 50 years, Tommi is dimming the lights and retiring, but before he does he is delivering one last night of SHOW STOPPING NUMBERS from his biggest roles… in “REAL” Broadway shows. Each song is weaved together with tales of Tommi’s experiences on the Great White Way.

“Tommi Lupone 11 O’Clock numbers is the next chapter for me as a performer. It’s part musical cabaret, part sketch comedy, all broadway REALNESS. I’m working to create original 11 O’clock numbers with THE Avery Jean Brennan and I’ll be writing the book based on my experiences as a musical performer. From backstage hookups, broken bones, being cast in the chorus to OVER THE TOP stage managers… TOMMI LUPONE is coming for you!”

2022 Sketch Comedy Project Fund

The 2022 Sketch Comedy Project Fund opens once again in Spring 2022. If you’ve got an ensemble-based comedy project that represents the next step in your collective careers, consider making an application!
